Where subscriptions appear in the smart home market: professional security monitoring services (Ring Protect Plus, SimpliSafe FastProtect), cloud backup, and remote access helpers. These are separate from the core hub function and entirely optional on every hub we recommend below.
The Ring distinction matters: since March 2023, Ring Alarm requires a Ring Protect Basic subscription ($3.99/mo) for app-based arm/disarm. This is why Ring Alarm does not appear in our top 5 — it has a de facto required subscription for reasonable use.
